Allergist serving Waco suburbs: Robinson and China Spring
Allergist serving Robinson and China Spring, TX. 10 to 15 minutes from our office. Family allergy care, testing, shots, and drops.

Robinson and China Spring are two of Waco's closest suburban communities, each with its own character and each within a short drive of our office. Robinson sits just south of Waco along old Highway 77, and China Spring is northwest of the city near the Bosque River. Despite being close to Waco, both communities have semi-rural settings with significant outdoor allergen exposure. If you live in Robinson or China Spring and have been relying on pharmacy-aisle allergy medications to get through the year, there is a better option less than 15 minutes away.
Key takeaways
- Robinson and China Spring are both within 10 to 15 minutes of our office, making allergy shot appointments easy to fit into your weekly routine.
- Both communities have semi-rural environments where outdoor allergen exposure (tree pollen, grass pollen, mold) is constant throughout the growing season.
- Root-cause immunotherapy (shots or sublingual drops) produces lasting results that over-the-counter medications cannot match.
Robinson: 10 minutes south on Highway 77
Robinson is a close-knit community directly south of Waco, accessible via old Highway 77 (Robinson Drive) or I-35. The drive to our office is about 10 minutes, depending on where in Robinson you live. Robinson has a mix of established neighborhoods with mature trees and newer developments on what was recently agricultural land.
The older parts of Robinson have large pecan, oak, and elm trees that produce significant pollen loads in spring. Pecan pollen, which peaks in April, is a frequently underestimated allergen in this area. Many Robinson patients who test negative for oak and cedar turn out to have pecan or elm sensitivity. The newer subdivisions on Robinson's perimeter sit on former farm and ranch land where Bermuda grass, Johnson grass, and ragweed grow aggressively in surrounding fields and empty lots.
Robinson's proximity to the Brazos River means bottomland mold exposure is relevant for residents on the eastern side of town. Creek systems running through Robinson add localized mold sources. After heavy rains, mold spore counts in these areas can spike dramatically. Residents who notice their allergies worsen significantly after rain may have a mold component that has not been identified through proper testing.
The Robinson school district draws families with children, and we see a fair number of pediatric allergy patients from the area. Children who play outdoor sports in Robinson deal with grass pollen exposure from April through October, and some develop exercise-induced allergy symptoms or asthma during this period. Youth baseball season coincides almost perfectly with the worst of grass pollen season, and we see Robinson kids every year whose symptoms peak during games and practices.
Robinson also has a notable fire ant population, as does much of Central Texas. For families with children who play in yards and parks, fire ant stings are a real concern. We test for venom allergy and offer venom immunotherapy for patients at risk of severe reactions. This is a safety issue that goes beyond standard allergy care.
China Spring: 15 minutes northwest near the Bosque River
China Spring is northwest of Waco, roughly 15 minutes from our office. The community sits near the Bosque River in an area where Hill Country terrain begins to transition into the Blackland Prairie. This means China Spring gets allergens from both ecosystems: cedar from the limestone hills to the west and grass and agricultural pollen from the prairie to the east.
The Bosque River valley through China Spring supports dense vegetation, including cedar, oak, pecan, and various hardwoods. Cedar pollen exposure in China Spring is notably heavier than in communities east of Waco because of the proximity to cedar-covered hillsides. During December through February, China Spring residents are in the direct path of cedar pollen, and daily counts can be extreme. We track these through our daily pollen count at allergywaco.com.
Mold exposure along the Bosque River is significant. The river bottom supports persistent moisture, and the decaying organic material along the banks produces mold spores from spring through fall. China Spring residents living near the river or any of the feeder creeks may have elevated mold exposure without realizing it, especially if their property includes shaded, damp areas. We have patients in China Spring whose homes are within a few hundred yards of the river, and their mold sensitivity profiles tend to reflect that proximity.
China Spring's character is rural-suburban. Many properties are on larger lots with natural vegetation, which means proximity to allergen sources is close. Unlike a dense urban subdivision where concrete and manicured lawn minimize plant diversity, China Spring lots often include native grasses, wildflowers, and untended border areas where ragweed and other allergenic weeds grow freely. This is part of the community's charm, but it also means higher allergen exposure for residents who are sensitized.
The China Spring school district, like Robinson's, has active youth sports programs. Outdoor practices during pollen season expose young athletes to concentrated pollen. Parents sometimes notice that their child's "seasonal cold" or exercise-related coughing follows the same pattern year after year. That pattern is usually an allergy, not recurrent infections.
What we treat
Seasonal allergies
The seasonal allergen calendar for Robinson and China Spring mirrors the broader Central Texas pattern, with some local variations. Cedar season (December through February) hits China Spring harder than Robinson due to the hillside cedar groves to the west. Oak and pecan pollen (March through May) affects both communities. Grass pollen (May through October) is heavy in Robinson's open areas and China Spring's natural lots. Ragweed (September through October) closes out the fall. We publish daily pollen counts and PollenCast seasonal forecasts at allergywaco.com.
Year-round allergies
Dust mites are present in homes across both communities. Mold exposure is elevated in both areas due to river and creek proximity. China Spring's Bosque River corridor and Robinson's Brazos River proximity create persistent mold sources. Pet dander is a common allergen for suburban families in both communities. For patients with symptoms that persist year-round regardless of the season, these perennial triggers are almost certainly involved.
Asthma
Allergy-triggered asthma in Robinson and China Spring patients often correlates with specific pollen seasons. A China Spring patient with cedar allergy may have well-controlled asthma for nine months of the year and significant worsening from December through February. A Robinson patient with grass allergy may struggle from May through October. Treating the underlying allergy through immunotherapy frequently improves asthma control year-round and reduces the need for daily controller medications.
Getting here from Robinson and China Spring
From Robinson, the drive to our office is about 10 minutes via Highway 77 (Robinson Drive) or I-35. Either route is direct and easy. From China Spring, the drive is about 15 minutes, typically via China Spring Road to Highway 6 or Loop 340. Both drives are short enough that allergy shot appointments fit easily into a weekday schedule.
During the build-up phase of immunotherapy, shots are typically weekly. At 10 to 15 minutes each way, plus the shot and 20-minute observation period, the total time commitment is about 45 minutes to an hour. During the maintenance phase (monthly shots), it is even less. We also offer sublingual drops for patients who prefer home-based treatment, and telehealth for follow-up consultations.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment runs about 60 to 90 minutes. We start with a detailed history, including questions about your home environment, proximity to waterways, outdoor activities, and symptom patterns throughout the year. For Robinson and China Spring patients, we ask specifically about river and creek exposure, property vegetation, and whether symptoms change after rain events (a clue to mold sensitivity).
Skin prick testing covers Central Texas seasonal and perennial allergens: cedar, oak, elm, pecan, ragweed, Bermuda grass, Johnson grass, dust mites, multiple mold species, cat dander, and dog dander. Results are available in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Your doctor reviews results, identifies the allergens responsible for your symptoms, and recommends a treatment plan. For patients with multiple sensitivities (common in Robinson and China Spring given the diverse allergen environment), immunotherapy can address all of them simultaneously. We explain the timeline, options (shots versus drops), and what improvement typically looks like over the first year.
Insurance and scheduling
We accept most major insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, TRICARE, and Medicare. Robinson and China Spring residents often have coverage through local employers, the Waco ISD system (for educators), or Baylor Scott and White, and we work with the vast majority of these plans. Call us to verify before your first visit.
Scheduling is available by phone or through allergywaco.com. We accommodate school and work schedules, and shot appointments are available throughout the day. For families with multiple members needing allergy care (common in Robinson and China Spring households), we can schedule back-to-back appointments to minimize trips.
